Top 10 famous and fastest hattrick

10. Kevin-Prince Boateng (Lecce 3-4 AC MILAN) - 14 minutes
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo may seem to bag a treble every second week, but it's Boateng who has the honour of scoring the fastest hat-trick so far this season in Europe. His feat was made all the more remarkable by the fact he came off the bench when the Rossoneri were 3-0 down, and his goals inspired the team to a stunning 4-3 comeback victory.

9. Marco van Basten (AC MILAN 4-0 IFK Goteborg) - 10 minutes
The master of the sublime scored one of the best ever Champions League goals in the game against Goteborg: an acrobatic bicycle kick just inside the penalty box. That overshadowed two other achievements on the night. He scored all four goals in the 4-0 win, and grabbed a hat-trick in just 10 minutes.

8. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Nottm. Forest 1-8 MANCHESTER UNITED) - 10 minutes
The 'Baby-faced Assasin' illustrated just why he was famously known as a super-sub in this mauling of Nottingham Forest. With United already cruising to a 4-1 lead with 20 minutes to go, Solskjaer was introduced to the game and he went on to score four on his own, three of which came within 10 minutes. He may not have bagged the fastest hat-trick, but his four goals in 12 minutes is a record.

7. Laszlo Kiss (HUNGARY 10-1 El Salvador) - 7 minutes
With Hungary 5-0 ahead in their opening 1982 World Cup encounter, Laszlo Kiss was thrown into the fray in place of Andras Torocsik, who surely entered the field with little inkling of the feat he was about to achieve. El Salvador were punished for having the temerity to grab a consolation goal, with the substitute firing in goals in the 69th, 72nd and 76th minutes as the Magyars eventually hit double figures.

6. Jermain Defoe (TOTTENHAM 9-1 Wigan) - 7 minutes
Another match that ended in a goal spree and a handy number of records. Defoe's seven-minute treble became the second fastest hat-trick in Premier League history. He also ended up with five goals in the match, making him only the third player in the English top flight to score five times in a single game.

5. Marco van Basten (AC MILAN 3-1 Atalanta) - 6 minutes
It's that man Van Basten again. That treble against Goteborg may have been quite an achievement for most, but it wasn't even the Dutchman's personal best. The season prior, he managed to bag a hat-trick in the space of only six minutes as the Rossoneri beat Atalanta 3-1 in Serie A. Milan were champions that season, thanks in part to his magnificent return of 25 league goals in 31 games.

4. David Villa (Athletic Bilbao 0-3 VALENCIA) - 5 minutes
Long before Villa usurped Raul and became the all-time leading goalscorer for the Spanish national team, he had the honour of scoring one of the quickest hat-tricks in the game. With the match at San Mames against Athletic tied at 0-0 and with only 10 minutes left on the clock, Villa broke Bilbao hearts when he scored three goals in the space of five minutes.

3. Robbie Fowler (LIVERPOOL 3-0 Arsenal) - 4 minutes
Defoe's triple strike against Wigan missed out on being the Premier League's fastest hat-trick by under three minutes. That mantle belongs to Fowler, who took just four minutes and 33 seconds to smash three past a shell-shocked Arsenal defence in 1994. That was all the Merseysiders needed as they cruised to a 3-0 victory.

2. Gerd Muller (Fortuna Dusseldorf 6-5 BAYERN MUNICH) - 4 minutes
'The Bomber' is one of football's most prolific goal machines. With well over 600 career goals, he bagged his fair share of hat-tricks. But none came as quickly as the four-minute treble in this 11-goal epic against Fortuna Dusseldorf. Unfortunately for Muller, he ended up on the losing side despite his personal heroics.

1. Tommy Ross (ROSS COUNTY 8-1  Nairn County) - 90 seconds
Ross was recently officially recognised to have scored the fastest hat-trick in football.

Not only did he strike thrice in an amazing 90 seconds, but he was only 18-years-old at the time. He also netted a total of seven goals in the 8-1 win - all after his side had gone 1-0 down. Even more remarkably, Ross's efforts were not made official in the Guinness Book of Records until 40 years later, as there was no official timekeeper for the match back in 1964.

Ross does not believe that his 90-second hat-trick will be surpassed. "This will probably be very difficult to beat because the celebrations now take at least a minute and a half," he explained. "There was no kissing in those days. When you scored, you just ran back to the halfway line, the captain patted you on the head and said ‘Well done, son’, and you got on with it."
