Latest team news: Manchester United

Preview: MU vs Everton - statistics

  • Everton have only beaten Manchester United three times at Goodison Park since the formation of the Premier League in 1992.
  • The Toffees have only scored 10 goals in the Premier League this season, with six of those scored in the final 10 minutes of the game.
  • United's 6-1 defeat to neighbours Manchester City was their heaviest ever loss in the Premier League.
  • Wayne Rooney is United's top scorer so far this season with nine in the league and 13 overall, but has not scored in his previous three appearances in the competition.
  • Everton have not kept a clean sheet in the past eight league and cup matches, whilst Manchester United have scored in their past 19 games.
  • Sir Alex Ferguson's side have not suffered back-to-back defeats in 31 games in all competitions.

Five reasons why Arsenal can beat Chelsea

1. CHELSEA'S FATIGUE

With Ramires doubtful and Didier Drogba suspended, Villas-Boas will rotate his side this Saturday, but the Chelsea manager's cause was not helped by being forced to play 120 minutes against a resilient Everton on Wednesday evening.

Branislav Ivanovic, David Luiz, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka are in contention to start against Arsenal this weekend but all played the full game, including extra-time, against David Moyes's side.

John Obi Mikel, who's appeared in all but one of Chelsea's Premier League games this term, was introduced just after half-time during his side's League Cup win but ended up playing 55 minutes, while the in-form Daniel Sturridge came on five minutes before the end of normal time before notching the goal that sealed the game after the restart.

In contrast, for Arsenal, no player who started against Stoke City last Sunday even featured in their League Cup victory over Bolton on Tuesday.

2. ROBIN VAN PERSIE'S SUBLIME FORM

Little wonder why Wenger is so keen to commit the 28-year-old to a new deal at the Emirates: 25 goals in 26 league outings in 2011 is likely to attract interest from Europe's elite.

The Arsenal boss has been in the same position before. Former captain Cesc Fabregas earned his reunification with Barcelona through gritty and, at times, talismanic one-man performances. Van Persie has carried the leader's torch in a similar vein as proved by his match-winning double after coming on as a second-half substitute against Stoke City last weekend.

The last time the Dutchman appeared at Stamford Bridge was in 2008, when he scored twice after half-time to hand Arsenal their most recent away win against Chelsea to date.

3. DIDIER DROGBA'S SUSPENSION

The Ivory Coast international has been forced to relinquish his regular starting role since the arrival of Fernando Torres in January, but even Villas-Boas would have found it difficult to drop a forward with such a prolific record against Arsenal.

The former Marseille striker has scored 13 times in 14 appearances in all competitions against Arsenal, while Wenger's side have won just once against Chelsea in the 14 games where Drogba has featured, drawing the other three and losing 10.

In games against Arsenal where the 33-year-old has been absent, the north London club are yet to lose after drawing one and winning two.

4. CHELSEA'S DEFENSIVE FRAILTIES

The recent referee criticisms conducted by Villas-Boas may be reminiscent of confrontations during Jose Mourinho's era at Stamford Bridge, but the 34-year-old appears to lack his fellow countryman's ability to install a resolute defence in his early days as Chelsea manager.

Despite being third in the Premier League, Chelsea have conceded 10 league goals so far this season. While the record may not rally calls for Villas-Boas' dismissal, it's worth noting that at the same stage last term under Carlo Ancelotti, the club had conceded just twice in the league. For a worse defensive record at this point in the campaign, you have to travel back to 2002/03 season when Chelsea were managed by Claudio Raneieri.

Coupled with that record is the allegations hanging over John Terry which, should he start on Saturday, could have an impact on the 30-year-old's performance. Two seasons ago, the England captain was caught up in a public feud with former team-mate Wayne Bridge and the pressure of such media and fan scrutiny took its toll, most notably at Goodison Park, where two costly mistakes by Terry led to Louis Saha scoring - and Everton picking up the win.

David Luiz's below-par defensive performances of late are also a cause for concern but it's likely the Brazilian will retain his place alongside Terry.

5. THOMAS VERMAELEN BACK IN THE SQUAD

Hearts were in mouths for the majority watching at the Emirates on Tuesday evening as the Belgian limped off late during Arsenal's League Cup victory over Bolton.

Thankfully for Wenger, Vermaelen, who has been sidelined since August with an Achilles injury, was nursing cramp following a performance in the League Cup that appears to be part of a hurried bid to get the centre-back's fitness up to speed in time for Saturday.

Vermaelen has appeared 10 times for Arsenal over the past two seasons, which will not fill Wenger with confidence as the Frenchman aims to pair the 25-year-old with summer recruit Per Mertesacker in an attempt to solve his side's unconvincing defence.

Should Vermaelen instantly recapture the form shown in his debut season at the Emirates, where his solid contribution resulted in 16 clean sheets in all competitions along with an impressive return of eight goals, Chelsea's attack could be nullified.

However, if Wenger does decide that the game has come too soon for the classy Belgian, his presence back in the squad wil nevertheless offer a timely boost for the Gunners.

Top 10 famous and fastest hattrick

10. Kevin-Prince Boateng (Lecce 3-4 AC MILAN) - 14 minutes
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo may seem to bag a treble every second week, but it's Boateng who has the honour of scoring the fastest hat-trick so far this season in Europe. His feat was made all the more remarkable by the fact he came off the bench when the Rossoneri were 3-0 down, and his goals inspired the team to a stunning 4-3 comeback victory.

9. Marco van Basten (AC MILAN 4-0 IFK Goteborg) - 10 minutes
The master of the sublime scored one of the best ever Champions League goals in the game against Goteborg: an acrobatic bicycle kick just inside the penalty box. That overshadowed two other achievements on the night. He scored all four goals in the 4-0 win, and grabbed a hat-trick in just 10 minutes.

8. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Nottm. Forest 1-8 MANCHESTER UNITED) - 10 minutes
The 'Baby-faced Assasin' illustrated just why he was famously known as a super-sub in this mauling of Nottingham Forest. With United already cruising to a 4-1 lead with 20 minutes to go, Solskjaer was introduced to the game and he went on to score four on his own, three of which came within 10 minutes. He may not have bagged the fastest hat-trick, but his four goals in 12 minutes is a record.

7. Laszlo Kiss (HUNGARY 10-1 El Salvador) - 7 minutes
With Hungary 5-0 ahead in their opening 1982 World Cup encounter, Laszlo Kiss was thrown into the fray in place of Andras Torocsik, who surely entered the field with little inkling of the feat he was about to achieve. El Salvador were punished for having the temerity to grab a consolation goal, with the substitute firing in goals in the 69th, 72nd and 76th minutes as the Magyars eventually hit double figures.

6. Jermain Defoe (TOTTENHAM 9-1 Wigan) - 7 minutes
Another match that ended in a goal spree and a handy number of records. Defoe's seven-minute treble became the second fastest hat-trick in Premier League history. He also ended up with five goals in the match, making him only the third player in the English top flight to score five times in a single game.

5. Marco van Basten (AC MILAN 3-1 Atalanta) - 6 minutes
It's that man Van Basten again. That treble against Goteborg may have been quite an achievement for most, but it wasn't even the Dutchman's personal best. The season prior, he managed to bag a hat-trick in the space of only six minutes as the Rossoneri beat Atalanta 3-1 in Serie A. Milan were champions that season, thanks in part to his magnificent return of 25 league goals in 31 games.

4. David Villa (Athletic Bilbao 0-3 VALENCIA) - 5 minutes
Long before Villa usurped Raul and became the all-time leading goalscorer for the Spanish national team, he had the honour of scoring one of the quickest hat-tricks in the game. With the match at San Mames against Athletic tied at 0-0 and with only 10 minutes left on the clock, Villa broke Bilbao hearts when he scored three goals in the space of five minutes.

3. Robbie Fowler (LIVERPOOL 3-0 Arsenal) - 4 minutes
Defoe's triple strike against Wigan missed out on being the Premier League's fastest hat-trick by under three minutes. That mantle belongs to Fowler, who took just four minutes and 33 seconds to smash three past a shell-shocked Arsenal defence in 1994. That was all the Merseysiders needed as they cruised to a 3-0 victory.

2. Gerd Muller (Fortuna Dusseldorf 6-5 BAYERN MUNICH) - 4 minutes
'The Bomber' is one of football's most prolific goal machines. With well over 600 career goals, he bagged his fair share of hat-tricks. But none came as quickly as the four-minute treble in this 11-goal epic against Fortuna Dusseldorf. Unfortunately for Muller, he ended up on the losing side despite his personal heroics.

1. Tommy Ross (ROSS COUNTY 8-1  Nairn County) - 90 seconds
Ross was recently officially recognised to have scored the fastest hat-trick in football.

Not only did he strike thrice in an amazing 90 seconds, but he was only 18-years-old at the time. He also netted a total of seven goals in the 8-1 win - all after his side had gone 1-0 down. Even more remarkably, Ross's efforts were not made official in the Guinness Book of Records until 40 years later, as there was no official timekeeper for the match back in 1964.

Ross does not believe that his 90-second hat-trick will be surpassed. "This will probably be very difficult to beat because the celebrations now take at least a minute and a half," he explained. "There was no kissing in those days. When you scored, you just ran back to the halfway line, the captain patted you on the head and said ‘Well done, son’, and you got on with it."
