Anderson
Age: 23
Position: Midfield

Weekly wages: £60,000

Why United did it:
Returned from long-term injury last season to have his best spell since 2008 and became a regular starter.
How he has performed since: Key part of title-winning squad because of his energy and drive, but still questions over his ability against the best sides.

Michael Carrick
Age: 30
Position: Midfield
Length of contract:  Until 2014
Weekly wages: £75,000

Why United did it:
Contract was due to expire in 2012 and the club wanted to protect his value.
How he has performed since: Has found himself in and out of the side due to patchy form since an impressive first two seasons at Old Trafford after signing in 2006.

Tom Cleverley
Age: 22
Position: Midfield
Length of contract: Until 2015
Weekly wages: £30,000

Why United did it:
The youngster started the season in outstanding form in central midfield, forcing his way in the side.

Patrice Evra
Age: 30
Position: Defence
Length of contract: Until 2014
Weekly wages: £90,000

Why United did it:
The left-back had less than 18 months left on his existing deal and United were desperate to keep him as he flirted with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
How he has performed since: Evra has been below-par for the last year and has been badly exposed at time, not least in Sunday's Manchester derby.

Darren Fletcher
Age: 27
Position: Midfield
Length of contract: Until 2015
Weekly wages: £80,000

Why United did it:
Pay rise and contract extension to recognise him importance to the side.

Ryan Giggs
Age: 37
Position: Midfield

Weekly wages: £80,000

Why United did it:
Player and club both felt he had more to contribute and should hold off retirement for at least one more season.
How he has performed since: Played a key role in a number of games at the back-end of last season, not least in both legs of the Champions League quarter-final win over Chelsea. Used sparingly so far this term.

To tie the youngster down amid interest from abroad.

Park Ji-Sung
Age: 30
Position: Midfield

Why United did it:
The South Korean midfielder was about to enter the final season of his existing contract, which was due to expire in 2012.
How he has performed since: Spent most of the season so far on the bench but has always been trusted by Ferguson in the big games later in the campaign.

Javier Hernandez
Age: 23
Position: Striker
Length of contract: Until 2016
Weekly wages: £90,000

Why United did it:
The Mexican was rewarded for his outstanding form in his first season at Old Trafford, which attracted the attention of Real Madrid.
How he has performed since: Likely to make first appearance since the announcement of his new deal at Everton this weekend.

Wayne Rooney
Age: 26
Position: Striker
Length of contract: Until 2015
Weekly wages: £220,000

Why United did it:
The striker controversially declared his desire to leave United but two days later performed a famous U-turn by agreeing a new deal.
How he has performed since: United's star man was off-colour for much of last season but was excellent in the final two months of the campaign and already has nine goals to his name this term.

Chris Smalling
Age: 21
Position: Defender
Length of contract: Until 2016
Weekly wages: £40,000

Why United did it:
The £10m signing produced some hugely impressive displays in his first season at the club.
How he has performed since: A key component of the United squad, although lately he has featured more at right-back than his preferred central defensive position.

Antonio Valencia
Age: 26
Position: Midfield
Length of contract:  Until 2015
Weekly wages: £80,000

Why United did it:
The winger was in fine form last season after returning from a serious ankle injury and was attracting interest from big clubs in Europe.
How he has performed since: Has found himself behind Nani and Young in the pecking order so far this season.

Nemanja Vidic
Age: 30
Position: Defender
Length of contract: Until 2014
Weekly wages: £90,000

Why United did it:
The United captain had suggested he may look to move abroad but the club were desperate to hold on to their main central defender.
How he has performed since: Imperious last season as he drove United to a 19th league title. Has struggled with injury problems so far this season.
