Wayne Watch

Review on Rooney's performance after being back from disastrous injury.

What role did Fergie give him?

ROONEY was the link man behind strikers Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez and he put in a real shift to track deep to help out the midfield.

He was on the ball constantly, but he only really got in position to have two pot-shots on goal — one of which came after a neat nutmeg on Dan Gosling.

Is he back to full fitness?

ALEX FERGUSON has said the only good thing about Rooney’s injury was that he was still able to graft hard in the gym.

He did not look 100 per cent but he never stopped working in his 76-minute run-out.

His touch was sharp but the position he played meant he never really had to be in full flight.

What impact did he have on game?

THE England man will see this as the start of the road back. He put in a mature display that showed him at his tactical, rather than lung-bursting, best.

He barely gave the ball away and created a cracking chance for Hernandez. Fergie will also have been pleased to see Rooney run off a worrying first-half knock.
