Schurrle deal close to conclusion

Outgoing Leverkusen chief executive Wolfgang Holzhauser says the club has reached an agreement with Chelsea over the transfer of Andre Schurrle and the loan of Kevin de Bruyne.

“We are in agreement with Chelsea. They buy [Andre] Schurrle for a certain transfer fee and in return [Kevin] de Bruyne is sent on a one-year loan,” Holzhauser told Rheinische Post.

“I assume that Chelsea stand by what has been agreed upon.”

The Schurrle and De Bruyne deal has been lined up since April, but late interest from Borussia Dortmund in the Belgium international looked to have stalled the transfer.

De Bruyne impressed for Werder during a year-long loan, scoring 10 goals and assisting a further nine, but he and his agent claimed he would like to either try his luck at Stamford Bridge or make the move to Champions League runners-up Dortmund, with a five-year deal already believed to be in place.

Earlier this week Dortmund announced the signing of Greece international Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Werder, a player previously linked with a move to Leverkusen.

Last week Leverkusen general manager Rudi Voller had called Dortmund “hypocritical” after they complained about the manner of Mario Gotze’s move to Bayern Munich while applying the same business methods.

“In the case of Sokratis, this is hypocritical. I can only grin about it. That’s the cycle in this business,” Voller said.

And Holzhauser has now hit out at Dortmund over De Bruyne. “Maybe we have come too close to Borussia Dortmund,” he said. “Maybe Dortmund wants to keep us down as a competitor.”
