Kedah FA partners with Cardiff City
ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Football Association (KFA)
are seeking expert help from English Premier League club Cardiff City in
a bid to regain their glory on the local scene.
KFA secretary-cum-treasurer Aminuddin Omar and Cardiff City director Datuk Lye Ek Seang signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU). It was witnessed by Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir and Cardiff City owner Tan Sri Vincent Tan.
The signing would also see a joint collaboration between the two teams to further improve the state’s football training programmes for youngsters.
Mukhriz said that for a start, the collaboration would involve the administration of the association and training of selected players.
“The agreement opens the door for KFA to get assistance to improve the skills of the players with the latest training methods used by Cardiff City. We will sit down as soon as possible to draw up the priorities for the immediate future as our collaboration is for the long-term development of the game in the state,” he said after the signing ceremony on Wednesday night.
Mukhriz, who is also KFA president, believes that Tan’s experience in guiding Cardiff City to the English Premier League could help them achieve success.
He added that apart from helping to assist in improving the skills of the players and training methods of the coaches, Tan had also proposed the setting up of a football academy in the state to train young talents.
“KFA welcome this proposal and will look into the details, like the procurement of land, location and infrastructure as soon as possible,” said Mukhriz.
“The State Economic Development Corporation has a piece of land in Sungai Petani and we’ll work with them to find an ideal location.”
Tan said that the proposed academy would be his personal venture in helping to develop young football talents in Kedah.
“This is my personal contribution to the development of sports here. The total investment will be determined later after an in-depth study, but I expect KFA to play a leading role in the setting up of the academy and, as such, they will have a major equity in it,” said Tan.
During the ceremony, Tan also made a personal contribution of RM2mil to KFA for their expenses.
