Arsene Wenger badly needs reinforcements at centre-forward, full-back and in central midfield, despite the advanced rehabilitations of long-term absentees Jack Wilshere and Bacary Sagna.
But the Frenchman’s famed prudence combined with his faith in the players he has nurtured means the £50 million kitty at his disposal could remain untouched.
Arsenal have made enquiries about the availability of a cluster of players this month, with rumours suggesting a potential move for Koln's Lukas Podolski may be in the offing.
However, the most likely recruit they will add to the capture of on-loan Thierry Henry is a player half the Frenchman’s age - highly rated Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, who is being talked of at St Mary’s in the same breath as another esteemed Academy graduate, Gareth Bale.

The big question is whether Aston Villa will sell prize asset Darren Bent if Liverpool come calling with a cheque that the Midlands club feel they cannot refuse.
Liverpool’s interest in the England international is genuine and there are strong rumours within the game that they are preparing a bid this month for Bent, who Villa will only off-load if they receive an offer that matches the £18m rising to £24m they paid Sunderland 12 months ago.
Should Bent change clubs for the second consecutive January, Villa will look to bring in a replacement beyond the on-loan Robbie Keane. The names of Didier Drogba and Andy Carroll have been touted by the club's hierarchy.
There could also be some centre-half movement at Villa Park. James Collins is a target for Sunderland and QPR after failing to agree new contract terms.

Steve Kean has promised there will be new arrivals at Ewood Park although his biggest battle will be to hang on to centre-half Christopher Samba, who is attracting covetous eyes from QPR if not from Tottenham anymore.
Kean wants to bring in a centre-forward, with Bordeaux’s Anthony Modeste and Fulham’s Andy Johnson among his prime targets. Johnson’s reluctance to leave London is proving a sticking point, however.
The club has also shown an interest in Paraguayan international midfielder Victor Caceres, although they have not yet placed an official bid.

Bolton are on the verge of signing USA centre-back Tim Ream from New York Red Bulls as a direct replacement for Gary Cahill, subject to a work permit appeal next week.
Another MLS player, French striker Sebastien Le Toux, is strong target for Owen Coyle as he tries to beef up the relegation candidates.
The Scot also wants some creativity in his team and is tracking Tottenham’s Giovani dos Santos and Blackburn’s Junior Hoilett, who is waiting to hear if Spurs’ interest will materialise into a firm offer.

Andre Villas-Boas has reinforced his central defence with the acquisition of Gary Cahill, a direct replacement for the ostracised Alex, who will join QPR if the west London rivals can agree on a fee.
With the club’s contract talks with Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou deadlocked, the departure of one of the Ivory Coast pair cannot be ruled out, while rumours of Fernando Torres’ possible departure refuse to completely die down.
Right-back remains a problem position for Chelsea, with Marseille’s Cesar Apilicueta among the targets. Villas-Boas also wants more midfield craft although Michael Essien’s earlier-than-expected return means that swoops for the likes of Luka Modric, Eden Hazard and Jack Rodwell will be postponed until the summer.
