Free agent select XI - BPL

The recently published list of Premier League players on course to be freed this summer made interesting reading.

Among the young prospects deemed to have not made the grade at the highest level and the fringe players heading for pastures new there were a number of names which jumped out and caught the eye.

These are men who boast significant experience, not just at Premier League level but also on the international stage and who are unlikely to remain in the free agent pool for too long.

And there was also enough talent on show for Sky Sports to decide to put together a team who would certainly be able to do more than just hold their own in England's top flight.

One of the great joys of football is that everyone has an opinion on the beautiful game, so why not cast your eye over our selections and explanations, and then make a case for your very own Free Agent XI using the feedback form at the foot of the page.

Subs: Gordon, Salgado, Gohouri, Hargreaves, Scharner, Klasnic, Owen.

Jussi Jaaskelainen gets the nod to be our last line of defence ahead of competition from Craig Gordon and Manuel Almunia, with the Bolton goalkeeper tipped for an immediate return to the top-flight with West Ham and former boss Sam Allardyce.

There was plenty of jostling to be in the back four, with Nicky Shorey and Jose Bosingwa eventually getting the nod to fill the respective full-back berths, while Carlos Cuellar and Ryan Nelsen make up the heart of the defence.

Our three-man midfield provides plenty of steel, with in-demand Wigan man Mohamed Diame featuring alongside Newcastle's Danny Guthrie and Republic of Ireland international Keith Andrews.

Louis Saha spearheads a three-man forward line, with support coming from UEFA Champions League winner Salomon Kalou and Colombia international Hugo Rodallega in a formation which should guarantee goals.

There is further experience on the bench, with Gordon acting as back-up goalkeeper, defensive cover from Michel Salgado and Steve Gohouri, midfield options in the shape of Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scharner and an attacking threat via Michael Owen and Ivan Klasnic.

Didier Drogba, Ledley King and Paul Scholes were also included in the original Premier League released players list, but have not been considered for selection here for a variety of reasons.

Drogba misses out due to the fact he is almost certain to head for a new club outside the Premier League, King's future with Spurs is still to be decided even though his contract has expired and Scholes has since signed a new one-year contract at Manchester United.
