Inside the world of the transfer makeweight
TOTTENHAM have offered Aston Villa their pick of FOUR players in a desperate
bid to land Christian Benteke.
Scott Parker, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Jake Livermore and Tom Huddlestone are all
being used as bait for the Villa hotshot.
But what is life like for the football transfer makeweight?
Here, SunSport looks at the players shoved towards the exit door — and how
they fared after their cruel rejections.
Samuel Eto’o
Barcelona to Inter Milan (2009)
BARCELONA handed over Eto’o and £40MILLION to land Inter
Milan’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic in astonishing 2009 switch.
Incredibly, the Italians also took Hleb on a year’s loan as part of the
mind-boggling transfer. The deal proved golden for Jose Mourinho’s side, who
went on to win the Treble.
Keith Gillespie
Manchester United to Newcastle (1995)
GILLESPIE was an add-on in the record-breaking £7m deal that took Andy Cole to
Manchester United in 1995.
He spent three years on Tyneside but retired last season after spells at
Doncaster and Irish side Longford Town.
William Gallas
Chelsea to Arsenal (2006)
REBEL Gallas wanted out in 2006 — threatening to score an OWN GOAL
if he was picked for the opening game of the season against Manchester City.
He was shunted out to Arsenal in a deadline-day move that saw Chelsea also pay
£5m for Ashley Cole.
Gallas went on to land a London treble with two years at Spurs, who released
him this summer.
Matyas Almeyda & Sergio Conceicao
Parma to Lazio (2000)
LAZIO were so desperate to land Parma icon Crespo they handed over £16m — AND
two stars Almeyda and Conceicao.
Crespo left Lazio for Inter Milan in 2002 — with Bernardo Corradi as a
makeweight — but flopped for Chelsea under Jose Mourinho.
Steve Finnan
Liverpool to Espanyol (2008)
IRISH defender packed bags for Spain as part of the £8million deal which took
Albert Riera to Anfield.
He returned to England in 2009 Fulham switch.
Steve Morison
Norwich to Leeds (2013)
MORISON was the bolt-on that took £1.7million Luciano Becchio to Norwich in
January.
But the ex-Millwall star did not hold up his end of the bargain and was last
month sent back to the Lions on a season-long loan.
Nemanja Matic
Chelsea to Benfica (2011)
BLUES bosses goofed when they let Matic go to Benfica in £21million David Luiz
deal — as they ALREADY want the midfielder back.
Luiz, meanwhile, is set for the Stamford Bridge exit door this summer.
