The most noteworthy Englishman to move abroad in recent years, the former Chelsea defender saw his opportunity in the Bundesliga come about thanks to the Frank Arnesen connection. The Danish coach, who now works for HSV after leaving his post as sporting director at Stamford Bridge, is confident the 23-year-old will provide the German club with a ball-playing presence at the back.
First impressions are mixed based on their disappointing display against Borussia Dortmund in the opening league fixture last Friday. Given time and patience though, as well as some degree of effort on the part of Mancienne, the centre-back could play himself into the conscience of the Hamburg fans, as well as Fabio Capello.

Former clubs: Newcastle United |
He may only be playing in the second tier of the Icelandic League, but former Newcastle United man Doninger has been the main reason for the IA Akranes renaissance that sees them on the verge of the title, which is running its course over the coming weeks.
One of a gaggle of Englishmen at the club, Doninger has excelled in midfield, driving attacks well and scoring regularly. At the time of writing, the 21-year-old has scored seven times in 14 league appearances. Would a move back to England be of interest to him? A lot depends on if clubs back home are actually aware of his displays.

The move of international goalkeeper Carson to Bursa was seen as something of a shock. The 25-year-old, however, had fallen out of favour at West Brom towards the end of last season, whilst his England career has also stalled of late. So when the Turkish club came calling, the lure of a new adventure proved strong.
Carson will be the first-choice goalkeeper and after a solid start for his new club in the Europa League, it is safe to assume he is starting to settle. He would be wise to note the experiences of another former England international in the country though: Darius Vassell was evicted from his hotel over unpaid bills whilst playing for Ankaragucu in 2009-10.

Weir, 20, signed a two-year contract recently with CD Nacional, the team who will be facing Birmingham City in the Europa League later this month. The Jersey-born central defender is highly thought of at the Madeira club, who loaned him to third tier side AD Camacha last season, where he was an ever-present. With Nacional looking to Weir to gain more experience, he has been loaned out again this season to Camacha.

Former clubs: Charlton, Crewe (loan), Gillingham (loan), Bristol Rovers (loan)

Former Charlton Athletic and Gillingham striker Dickson spent last season tearing up the Cypriot 1st Division. Under the stewardship of fellow Englishman Stephen Constantine, Dickson finished second top scorer in the division as Salamina won promotion back to the top flight.
After some behind-the-scenes politicking over the summer, Dickson finds himself back at the club and set to continue his consistently good form in front of goal. Although lacking fitness compared to the rest of his team, he has already made a positive impression in pre-season friendlies. It bodes well for Dickson, Constantine and Salamina.
