Young close to United switch

Ashley Young is close to sealing a transfer to Premier League champions Manchester United, according to reports on Friday.

Young, 25, is set to sign for Sir Alex Ferguson's side after he returns from holiday, ending his four-year spell in the Midlands. The Aston Villa winger has long been linked with a move away from the Birmingham outfit and is rumoured to have turned down a new contract at Villa Park.

The fee for the England international is thought to be around £16 million and he looks set to follow compatriot Phil Jones as United's second high-profile capture of the transfer window, although the deal for the defender has hit a snag over price.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce, who spent eight years as a player at Man Utd and is also trying to buy three of United's players, told ESPNsoccernet: ''Ashley Young is a terrific signing for Sir Alex. There are not too many naturally good wide players these days, and Young is one of the best, so he will naturally enhance the United team.

"But the fact that United are willing to spend big money, at record levels in one go for the club, shows what Manchester United are all about, they are continually evolving.

"They have lost Paul Scoles, and know Ryan Giggs cannot go on forever, but they never stand still, and the way Sir Alex is going about his business at the moment show that he means business. Once again Manchester United will be the benchmark for the new season. Can anyone catch them... well, I would doubt it."

Young scored seven goals in 34 Premier League appearances last season, in addition to scoring twice for Fabio Capello's England team.
