Sunderland snap up Ba, Peruzzi next

Sunderland have completed the signing of Le Havre midfielder El-Hadji Ba on a free transfer, while Velez Sarsfield full-back Gino Peruzzi is on the verge of finalising a move to the Stadium of Light.

Ba, 20, has signed a three-year deal with the Black Cats and becomes the seventh player to join the club this summer, following the arrivals of Valentin Roberge, Modibo Diakite, Cabral, Jozy Altidore, David Moberg Karlsson and Duncan Watmore.

Sunderland confirmed the signing via a statement on their official website on Wednesday.

The statement read: “Sunderland AFC have confirmed that French starlet El Hadji Ba has joined the club. The France Under-20 international has agreed a three-year deal on Wearside after his contract with French side Le Havre expired last month.”

Ba, who made 12 league appearances for Le Havre after graduating from their youth system, has already joined up with his new team-mates and manager Paolo Di Canio at Sunderland’s training camp in Italy.

And the France Under-20 international could soon be joined by Peruzzi, 21, after Velez confirmed that the defender will head to England on Thursday to complete his switch to the Stadium of Light.

The Argentine side said in a statement on their official website that they have agreed a deal with the Black Cats for the player’s transfer.

The statement read: “Velez Sarsfield and Sunderland Association Football Club have reached an agreement to transfer the player Gino Peruzzi.''

The £3.5 million deal had looked to have collapsed earlier in the week after Velez vice-president Julio Baldomar claimed that Peruzzi had rejected the personal terms offered to him by Sunderland.

Di Canio will welcome the news, having been keen to bring in a full-back before the start of the new season.

Danny Rose returned to parent club Tottenham at the end of last term, while Phil Bardsley looks to be deemed surplus to requirements. Sunderland also missed out on signing Le Havre youngster Benjamin Mendy, who opted to join Marseille rather than make the move to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, reports in Italy claim that the Black Cats are close to sealing a deal for Juventus midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini.
