Manchester United named football's most influential brand ahead of rivals Liverpool

The Red Devils are the second most influential brand in sports licensing for the last 12 months, behind the 2012 London Olympics.

Premier League champions Manchester United have been named as the most influential football club brand in the world, ahead of arch rivals Liverpool.

The Red Devils finished second in the Licensing.biz Power List, as voted for by a panel of independent judges, with only the London 2012 Olympic Games considered as a more influential brand in sport.

The website's editor Samantha Loveday said: “It is a reflection of the properties which the industry itself believes have made the most impact over the past 12 months."

United were praised for their massive commercial presence across the globe and for their maximisation of retail partnerships, having struck sponsorship deals with a number of companies in recent times including Bwin, Santander and Fuji TV.

Additionally, a world record deal with General Motors has been signed to see Chevrolet become their main shirt sponsor from the 2014-15 season - worth a staggering £357 million.

One judge said that the club was "the only truly global British football brand," due to their presence across both Asia and the Americas, whilst another commented "you can't argue with that success and it is genuinely international."

Liverpool were the second biggest football club on the list (fifth overall) with the five-time European champions' history a key reason.

Spanish champions Barcelona, the second richest club in the world in terms of revenue with an annual turnover of $613m, were the third best football club brand (sixth overall) while both Premier League leaders Arsenal and 2012 Champions League winners Chelsea feature in the overall top ten.
