'Hello, police? I'd like to report the referee': Furious Manchester United fan dials 999 after Nani red card
The 18-year-old, from Nottinghamshire, felt the controversial red card during the second-leg clash against Real Madrid was a crime and contacted police.
A furious Manchester United fan was so outraged by last night’s controversial decision to send off winger Nani he dialled 999 to report the referee.
The 18-year-old, from Nottinghamshire, felt the red card during the second-leg clash against Real Madrid was a crime and contacted police.
Manchester United’s treble dream was crushed by the 57th minute decision, which saw Nani shown a straight red for a high tackle on Alvaro Arbeloa.
Manager Alex Ferguson was too distraught to speak after the defeat and left assistant Mike Phelan to face the world’s media.
Ferguson was clearly not the only one raging at Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir’s decision – and the disgusted fan dialled 999 from his home, near Bingham, around 9.20pm last night.
Nottinghamshire Police are now using the call to highlight the dangers of wasting police time.
Control Room Chief Inspector Ted Antill said: “While this recent example may be amusing, it illustrates the sort of insincere calls we have to deal with on a daily basis in the Control Room.
“There may be people out there in real trouble who need our help and they have to wait because we are tied up with calls like this one, reporting a referee from the television.
“It’s no joke. In this case, the man realised his bad judgement and apologised and we decided not to pursue it further.
“But we can and we do prosecute people for wasting police time and making false reports.”
There were 6,933 recorded hoax calls to Nottinghamshire Police in 2012, with calls increasing during holiday periods, and especially in August.
